A warehouse worker hurts his low back, goes to the emergency room, is given Percocet and is sent home. A month later, he does the same thing; he hurts his back, goes to the emergency room, and is given more Percocet. His girlfriend, who was referred to me by another patient, refers her boyfriend, the warehouse worker, to me. We sit down, do a detailed history, a complete chiropractic exam, with no x-rays, and begin treatment.
First we address the fact that he needs to go to a medical doctor to de-tox off the Percocet. Second, we begin treatment to adjust his L4 lumbar vertebrae off his L5 nerve. Next, some physiotherapy, including electrical muscle stimulation to relax his lumbar musculature, ultrasound for deep inflammation and heat to bring blood supply for healing.
The patient was placed on twice a week treatment for the next four weeks. After the first two weeks, the patient is 70% improved and now we are working on stretching and strengthening his core musculature.
Since he works in a warehouse lifting and twisting, we have begun educating him on ergonomics, which is the study of man in his environment. Hopefully, in the next few weeks this patient will be even more improved.
